Pizza Party!

Group Meeting:  The children brought their favorite books to school.  They took turns telling the title of the book and why they liked the book.  We had quite a variety of books!

Story:  The story for today was The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle.  This was a book that we didn't get to read during Eric Carle week.  In this story, a spider is busy spinning a web.  Her animal friends what to play with her, but she is too busy.  At the end of the story, the spider finishes the web and catches the pesty fly that has been bothering all of the animals in the book.

Large Group:  The children did a relay race with the books that we have read during this special month.  Every child was given a book.  They had to race to the other side of the room and put it on a chair according to the author's picture.  When all of the books were in place, we checked them to make sure they were in the right place.  I was amazed!  The children were able to sort the books by author with only one or two mix-ups.

Snacks:  The children enjoyed Papa Murphy's cheese pizza!  The morning class celebrated with Mrs. Smith's class.  The afternoon class celebrated with Mrs. Lehenbauer's class.

Group Meeting:  Tomorrow, we will be celebrating our accomplishment of reading 2000 books by the end of April.  The children have been asked to bring their favorite book to school.  We will eat pizza and read books.

Small Groups:  During our Small Group time, we remembered the author/illustrators that we learned about in April and made lists of the books that they had written.  I was very surprised at how well the children could remember the names of the books that we had read.

Story:  The story for today was Wild About Books by Judy Sierra.  A librarian mistakenly drives her bookmobile to the zoo.  The animals soon get very excited about reading books and writing their own stories.  They build their own library so that children and animals can check out books to read.  Ask your child to tell you some of the books that are mentioned in this story.

Large Group:  The children moved to the music The Elephant by Hap Palmer.  The children listen to the music and move slowly when the rhythm is slow and quickly when the rhythm is fast.

Snacks:  The morning snack was crackers, apples, peanut butter, and milk brought by Addy.  The afternoon snack was grapes, cheese crackers, and milk brought by Brooklyn.  Thank you, Addy and Brooklyn!

Art Show Tonight!

Small Groups:  The children completed a Let's Find Out magazine about Earth Day.  Earth Day was April 22, but it's never too late to talk about how to care for our environment.

Large Group:  The children went to the Outdoor Classroom.

Group Meeting:  I read a book to the children written by Dr. Seuss.  This book is a little different from most of his books.  The title is My Many Colored Days.  This book is illustrated by two other artists.  The theme of this book is that colors can be used to describe our feelings.

Small Groups: After reading My Many Colored Days, we did an experiment using colors.  The children dropped yellow, red, and blue liquid watercolor onto a pan of milk.  The colors floated on top of the milk and began to mix just a little.  Then, one child dipped a Q-tip into dish soap and touched the milk.  The colors moved away from the Q-tip very quickly and began to mix.  I explained that this happens because of the fat in the milk being touched by the detergent.  YouTube has some wonderful videos about this experiment.  It would be fun to try it at home using food coloring.

Story:  The story for today was What Pet Should I Get? by Dr. Seuss.  A boy and his sister Kay have been told that they can get one pet from the pet store.  Which one should they get?  At the end of the story, the picture shows the children leaving the store with a basket, but the words do not tell us what pet they chose?   It was interesting to see the children's reaction to having to end the story with their own thoughts of which pet was selected.

Large Group:  Because of the weather, we stayed inside.  Both classes asked if we could play the Shoe Game which was interesting to me.  It's so simple and yet so fun!

Snacks:  The morning class had pretzel rods, grapes, and milk brought by Rory.  The afternoon class had mini pancakes and juice brought by Avani.  Thank you, Rory and Avani!

Group Meeting:   We used the Promethean board to listen to the story Ten Apples Up On Top by Dr. Seuss.  This is one Seuss book that I do not have, so I was happy to see a read along version on YouTube.

Small Groups:  After listening to the story Ten Apples Up On Top, the children completed a paper in which they used daubers to place the correct amount of apples on top of the dog, lion, and tiger's head.  To do so, they had to identify the numerals 1-10 and place the corresponding amount.

Story:  During story time, I read There's a Wocket in my Pocket by Dr. Seuss.  In this book, Dr. Seuss creates characters to rhyme with objects in the house.  There was a Wasket in the basket, a Nooth Grush on the tooth brush and a Yottle in the bottle.  After the story, we made up our own nonsense rhyming words.

Large Group:  The morning class used the parachute to do some gross motor activities.  The afternoon class went to the Outdoor Classroom.

Snacks:  The morning class had crackers, bread, peanut butter, jelly, and milk brought by Monroe and Noah.  The afternoon class had an assortment of sweet bread and juice brought by Asher.  Thank you, Monroe, Noah, and Asher!

We had to cancel classes this morning due to a plumbing issue.  When I got to the preschool this morning, the drinking fountain in the hallway was putting out a small stream of water.  I jiggled the handle to make it stop.  That caused the fountain to shoot water straight up into the air and all over the floor.  To make it worse, nothing that I did would make it stop.  It didn't take long for the floor to be covered in water.  I scrambled to find buckets to catch the water until I could get to the water shut off valve.  Unfortunately, the only way to make the water stop was to shut off water to the whole building.  Without water to wash, flush, and run the dishwasher, we could not hold classes for the morning.  The plumber came and took the fountain apart to find the valve inside so that only the fountain could be shut off.  The water was turned back on and we were able to have afternoon class.  Thank you morning parents for being so understanding!

For the afternoon class:

Group Meeting:  The author for this week is Theodore Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.  We watched a video about Dr. Seuss that went with a Let's Find Out Magazine.  The children are bringing the magazine home today to be completed with a parent.

Small Groups:  We are making final plans for the Art Show.   Things are starting to look really pretty around here!

Story:  I read Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss.  This is the story of Sam I Am who does not want to eat green eggs and ham.  Will he eat them in a boat, with a goat?  Will he eat them with a fox, in a box?  Most of the children had heard this story before and helped me to fill in the rhyming words.

Large Group:  The children played a game with the parachute taking turns running underneath as the other children held it up.

Snacks:  The snack was Goldfish and juice brought by Anaya.  Thank you, Anaya!

Group Meeting:  We have reached our goal of 2000!  That's amazing!  It only took us 3 weeks to reach our goal.  We will celebrate with a pizza party on April 30th.

Small Groups:  Our Let's Find Out Magazine was about the signs of Spring.  The accompanying video was about the sounds of Spring.

After play time, we had our Easter/Spring Party.  We started with a snack of Cheddar Bunnies, marshmallows, pretzels, and M&Ms.  Our first game was the Bunny Hop(see below).  After that, we did relay races, balancing an egg on a spoon.  At the end, we did an egg hunt in the Outdoor Classroom.

The children were given an egg from the church.  Inside was an animal and an invitation to attend Vacation Bible School in the summer.

Happy Easter!

Activity #1 Yellow Group
Activity #2 Green Group
Activity #3 Red Group

But with each transformation in size, shape, and color, the chameleon learns that maybe being yourself is best of all.  After I read this book, I asked the children if Eric Carle was trying to teach us something with this book.  Ask your child to tell you what we learned.
